ADIT, the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation
You are in the right place to get the full picture. Here is what ADIT is, the doors it opens, how the exams work and how to register, and the way to prepare that actually pays off.
What it is
ADIT is a standalone diploma awarded by the Chartered Institute of Taxation in the UK. It is modular, so you build it one exam at a time, and it is designed for an international audience rather than a single country's rules. There are no entry requirements and you can sit it from anywhere, which is a large part of why it travels so well across firms and borders.
The opportunities it opens
ADIT is recognised by international tax teams worldwide. It is a strong signal for roles in cross-border advisory, transfer pricing, in-house tax at multinationals, and global mobility. Because it is not tied to one country, it is especially useful if you want your career to move across jurisdictions rather than stay in a single market.
How to sit it
To gain the diploma you complete the compulsory Module 1, Principles of International Taxation, plus two further modules chosen from the jurisdiction options and the thematic options such as Transfer Pricing. You register directly with the CIOT, choose your modules, and sit the exams in the sessions they run through the year. Full timetables, fees and registration sit on the CIOT ADIT pages.
The essentials
- Awarding body: Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT)
- Structure: Module 1 (Principles) plus two option modules
- Entry requirements: none, open to all
- Recognition: used by international tax teams worldwide
How to study for it
The candidates who do best stop treating the material as a list of definitions and start tracing the journey of a single figure, from profit, through the treaty and domestic rules, to who finally gets to tax it. Read each double tax treaty article as an answer to one question, which is who taxes what. Then drill past papers under timed conditions, because ADIT rewards people who can apply the rules quickly, not just recall them.
